Advancement Path
The responsibility for a boy's advancement in Cub Scouting is a team effort among the Pack, the boy and his family. Many advancement requirements are done at den meetings, but some are completed at home with the family.

Bobcat (Earned by All Scouts)

No matter what age or grade a boy joins Cub Scouting, he must earn his Bobcat badge before he can advance to the rank of Tiger Cub, Wolf, Bear, or Webelos. A boy must complete the Bobcat requirements, which include:

¦ Learn and say the Cub Scout motto, the Cub Scout Promise, and the Law of the Pack and tell what they mean;
¦ Show the Cub Scout sign, salute, and handshake and tell what they mean; and
¦ Show that you understand and believe that it is important to be honest and trustworthy.

Lion Cub program provides exciting indoor and outdoor activities specifically designed for kindergarten boys and their adult partner. Adult partners are there to support and guide, and allow the new Cub Scout to discover risks and rewards under adult supervision.

Learning by Doing

A Lion Cub learns by doing these things himself. As he learns and grows, the relationship with their adult partner grows as well. At the conclusion of their kindergarten year, the Lion Cub will transition to Tiger Cubs and continue on their journey through Cub Scouting.

Tiger Cub (1st Grade)

To begin his path to the Tiger Cub rank, the Tiger Cub, 1st Grade or (age 7) must learn the Cub Scout promise, the Cub Scout sign, and the Cub Scout salute.

1. Complete each of the following Tiger required adventures with your den or family:
  a. Backyard Jungle
  b. Games Tigers Play
  c. My Family’s Duty to God
  d. Team Tiger
  e. Tiger Bites
  f. Tigers in the Wild

2. Complete one Tiger elective adventure of your den or family’s choosing.

3. With your parent or adult partner, complete the exercises in the pamphlet How to Protect Your Children From Child Abuse: A Parent’s Guide, and earn the Cyber Chip award for
your age.*

*If your family does not have Internet access at home AND you do not have ready Internet access at school or another public place or via a mobile device, the Cyber Chip portion of this requirement may be waived by your parent or adult partner

Wolf (2nd Grade)

The Wolf rank is for boys who have finished first grade (or who are 8 years old).

1. Complete each of the following Wolf required adventures with your den or family:
  a. Call of the Wild
  b. Council Fire
  c. Duty to God Footsteps
  d. Howling at the Moon
  e. Paws on the Path
  f. Running With the Pack

2. Complete one Wolf elective adventure of your den or family’s choosing.

3. With your parent or guardian, complete the exercises in the pamphlet How to Protect Your Children From Child Abuse: A Parent’s Guide, and earn the Cyber Chip award for your age.*

*If your family does not have Internet access at home AND you do not have ready Internet access at school or another public place or via a mobile device, the Cyber Chip portion of this requirement may be waived by your parent or guardian.

Bear (3rd Grade)

The Bear rank is for boys who have finished second grade (or are 9 years old).

1. Complete each of the following Bear required adventures with your den or family:
  a. Bear Claws
  b. Bear Necessities
  c. Fellowship and Duty to God
  d. Fur, Feathers, and Ferns
  e. Grin and Bear It
  f. Paws for Action

2. Complete one Bear elective adventure of your den or family’s choosing.

3. With your parent or adult partner, complete the exercises in the pamphlet How to Protect Your Children From Child Abuse: A Parent’s Guide, and earn the Cyber Chip award for your age.*

Webelos Scouts (4th Grade)

A Webelos dens are for boys who have completed third grade (or reached age 10). The Webelos den program is different from the Cub Scout den program. Everything in the Webelos Scout program is more challenging than what younger boys in the pack do.

1. Be an active member of your Webelos den for three months. (Being active means having good attendance, paying your den dues, and working on den projects.)

2. Complete each of the following Webelos required adventures with your den or family:
  a. Cast Iron Chef
  b. Duty to God and You
  b. First Responder
  c. Stronger, Faster, Higher
  d. Webelos Walkabout

3. Complete two Webelos elective adventures of your den or family’s choosing.

4. With your parent or guardian, complete the exercises in the pamphlet How to Protect Your Children From Child Abuse: A Parent’s Guide, and earn the Cyber Chip award for your age.*

The highest award in Cub Scouts is earned by AOL Scouts that have been active participants in their den and are ready to join a Boy Scout troop. Many of the requirements for the Arrow of Light are intended to familiarize the scout with a local troop and hopefully show him that crossing over into a troop is the next step to take in scouting. A scout that earns his Arrow of Light patch has also completed nearly all the requirements to earn the Scout badge in the troop so he has already begun his Boy Scout trail.

1. Be active in your AOL den for at least six months since completing the fourth grade or for at least six months since becoming 10 years old. (Being active means having good attendance, paying your den dues, and working on den projects.)

2. Complete each of the following Arrow of Light required adventures with your den or family:
  a. Building a Better World
  b. Camper
  c. Duty to God in Action
  d. Scouting Adventure

3. Complete three Webelos elective adventures of your den or family’s choosing.

4. With your parent or guardian, complete the exercises in the pamphlet How to Protect Your Children From Child Abuse: A Parent’s Guide, and earn the Cyber Chip award for your age.*
